In the movie A Difficult Life from 1961, we follow the life of Antonio, played by Alberto Sordi, a man struggling to make ends meet in post-World War II Rome. The film, directed by Dino Risi, captures the harsh realities of life for the working class during this time period. Antonio is a man of many trades, but none of them seem to be able to provide him with a steady income. He works as a barber, a porter, and even a gigolo, but he can never seem to make enough money to support himself and his family.

Despite his financial struggles, Antonio is a man who refuses to give up. He is tenacious and determined, always searching for ways to improve his situation. He dreams of opening his own barbershop, but every time he comes close to realizing his dream, something falls through.

Antonio's wife, Elide, played by Lea Massari, is a loyal and supportive partner in his struggles. She is a hardworking woman who is just as determined as her husband to make a better life for themselves and their children.

As the film progresses, we see Antonio face a variety of obstacles that test his will to survive. He is blackmailed by a former client, he is falsely accused of stealing, and he even spends time in jail.

Through it all, however, Antonio remains unbroken. He refuses to let the hardships of life get him down, and he continues to fight for a better future for himself and his family.

One of the most striking aspects of A Difficult Life is its portrayal of post-war Rome. The city is depicted as a place of great struggle and poverty, with many of its residents living in squalor. Despite this, however, there is a sense of community among the working class that is inspiring to see.

The performances in the film are also exceptional. Sordi brings a wonderful sense of humanity and authenticity to his portrayal of Antonio. He captures the character's struggles and triumphs with a great deal of nuance and complexity. Massari is also excellent in her role as Elide, providing a strong counterbalance to Antonio's more impulsive and hot-headed character.

It should be noted that A Difficult Life is not without its flaws. At times, the film can feel overly sentimental or melodramatic. Some viewers may find themselves rolling their eyes at some of the more contrived plot points.

Overall, however, A Difficult Life is a powerful and moving film that captures the spirit of post-war Italy. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the working class, and a reminder of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
