A Married Woman is a French romantic drama that was written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Featuring Bernard Noel and Macha Meril, the movie was distributed by Columbia Films. The story follows Charlotte (played by Macha Meril, a thoroughly young and beautifully poised modern woman. She is always very well-dressed, though never overly so. Always acting in good taste, she is both innocent and yet shrewd and slightly wanton at the same time. She has a bi-amorous nature, despite her marriage to a boring and dull witted pilot (played by Phillippe Leroy).
She has a son from a prior relationship and is very ambivalent about becoming a mother again due to her obsession with being fashionable. She regularly follows trends, carefully measuring her bust to ensure that it is in accordance with what is in vogue at the time.
Charlotte finally reveals her distanced viewpoint concerning the brutality of the numerous death camps of the Nazi regime. She seems not to care, not because she is insensitive, bur rather, apathetic since the topic has nothing to do with the next fabulous fashion trend or perfume, the things she cares for most.
She shrugs off the problems of the day, while at the same time dominating her world and those around her. As Charlotte continues to deliberately identify whom her next baby daddy will be, she very cautiously treads on this ground with her new husband and her lover, who is an actor.
There is an awkwardness in her responses that is hard to figure, as she shrugs her shoulders and challenges the gazes of people in the group. Finally, Charlotte manages to eavesdrop on two homely females in high school as they contemplate the eventual loss of virginity. Then a magazine depicting female undergarment photos is shown. It is apparent that the ads are meant to increase the confidence of women by bolstering their chests.
