The story is about Pearl and Marty. They are a couple living in New York. Marty repairs television for a living. Pearl and Marty are of middle class in status in the movie. The movie begins when the couple and a couple of other individuals go to a summer retreat. The couple went together with a few family members including their Alison and Danny, their son and daughter. Marty's mother also went with them. They had always visited the same summer camp each year.
Marty is having difficulty finding work in the nearby area thus he needs to work in a place far away from home. Marty only visits them on weekends. Because of the situation, Pearl feels isolated and lonely at times.
Pearl got pregnant with her first child at the early age of seventeen. She also feels that she missed the enjoyment of her youth. Since Marty is not always around, Pearl got attracted to Walker.
Alison got neglected because of the whole thing with Pearl and Walker. Alison experienced her first menstrual period. She also had her first kiss with a boy at the camp named Ross.
In the course of the movie, Marty was forced to work even more because of the increasing demand for TV repair as the whole world was anticipating the very first moon landing. As the town was in a celebrating mood with the historic moon landing, Pear slept with Walker. Lilian, Marty's mother, discovered Pearl's affair and tries to persuade her to end it.
However, the affair still continues because Marty cannot come home the next weekend because of the traffic jam that is caused by the one of the most celebrated festival ever, The Woodstock Festival. The Woodstock Festival event is only a walking distance from where Pearl's colony. Though Pearl forbade her daughter from going to the festival, Alison disobeyed and went to the festival without Pearl knowing it. Pearl and Walker went to the festival together. Pearl was carousing Walker in the festival, and Alison saw the whole thing.
It was not long until Marty found out about the whole affair. Marty and Alison then confronted Pearl in a very emotional scene. Pearl was then put into a position in which she has to choose between her family and her desires to be free from her marriage.
Pearly ultimately makes a decision, and that is to stay with her family. Pearl talked to Walker about her decision. Walker says he understands.
The final scene was between Mary and Pearl dancing together to the tune of "When You're Smiling" by Dean Martin. Then Marty changed the station and they both continued dancing to the tune of "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix.
