Acacia is a 2003 South Korean horror film directed by Park Ki-hyung, and centers around a couple, Mi-sook and Do-il, who have been unable to conceive a child through conventional means. Not wanting to give up on their dream of having a family, they adopt a young boy named Jin-sung. Shortly after his arrival, strange things begin to happen in their household. The acacia tree that Jin-sung brought with him from the orphanage starts to wilt, and curious markings appear on Do-il's body. As the family's situation becomes more and more unpredictable, they soon realize that their new son may not be the innocent child they thought he was.

The movie starts off with shots of an abandoned orphanage, which immediately sets a foreboding tone. The audience is then introduced to the couple, Mi-sook and Do-il, who are undergoing fertility treatment but have had no luck. One day, they receive a call from an orphanage telling them that a young boy named Jin-sung is available for adoption. Initially hesitant due to their failed attempts at conceiving, the couple decided to go through with the adoption.

Upon Jin-sung's arrival, the family's life takes a turn for the worse. The acacia tree that Jin-sung brought with him starts to wilt and the family starts experiencing unexplainable events. Do-il starts to develop marks on his body that seem to be caused by the acacia thorns. The boy's behavior starts to become increasingly strange, and he seems to be fixated on the acacia tree. As the family digs deeper into Jin-sung's past, they discover that he may not be who they think he is.

As the movie progresses, the family's situation becomes more and more dire. It is later revealed that Jin-sung has ties to the dark, abandoned orphanage seen at the beginning of the film. The movie combines effective scares with an exploration of adoption, family dynamics, and parenthood. The film delves into the psychological horror of how a couple's quest for a family may lead them to make choices that could ultimately destroy their lives.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the movie is how it manages to evoke a sense of both empathy and fear towards Jin-sung. Despite his potentially demonic tendencies, there is a sense of sympathy for him which only heightens tension throughout the movie. The portrayals of the characters by actors Shim Hye-jin, Jin-geun Kim, and Oh-bin Mun are particularly strong, making the audience truly invest in the family's plight.

The cinematography is also noteworthy, the camera captures the small details of the family's life and contrasts them with the ever-encroaching horror. The acacia tree's presence is particularly unsettling, both a symbol of hope and the source of the family's downfall. The film's sound design is also particularly effective, with the use of minimalist music highlights the eerie silence and raises the tension to scare the audience.

In conclusion, Acacia is a skillfully crafted horror movie that will leave you feeling unsettled. With its sharp and poignant commentary on adoption, family dynamics, and parenthood, it is perfect for fans who enjoy a thoughtful horror movie. With the strong characterization, beautiful cinematography, and engrossing storyline, this movie is a must-see for anyone looking for something to challenge them. Though the movie may not offer the typical jump-scares associated with horror, the creeping dread and sense of unease that it creates are sure to leave a lasting impression on its viewers.
