Alabama Moon is a 2009 film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Watt Key. The movie follows the life of a young boy named Moon, who has spent his entire life living in the wilderness with his father. His father, an anti-government and anti-society man, teaches Moon how to hunt, build shelter and survive in the wild. However, when Moon’s father dies, Moon is forced to make his way to Alaska, where his mother lives. Moon embarks on his journey with nothing but his wits, survival skills, and a fierce determination to find his mother.

On his journey, Moon meets a cast of characters from all walks of life. He is befriended by a group of kids who have formed their own makeshift family, and together they navigate the dangerous and unpredictable world of the adults they encounter. The group is pursued by a corrupt sheriff who suspects Moon's father of being a terrorist, and who seeks to capture Moon and send him to a juvenile detention center.

Throughout the film, Moon grapples with the challenge of reconciling his upbringing with the reality of city life, and the expectations that come with it such as school and human interaction. Meanwhile, the other members of the group struggle with their own histories and family dynamics, as well as the challenges of growing up in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

As Moon struggles to adapt to his new world, he must also confront the dark truths of his past, including long-held secrets that threaten to tear his fragile new family apart. The film is a heartbreaking and inspiring story of family, friendship, survival, and the human spirit's capacity to endure and overcome adversity.

The three child actors (Jimmy Bennett as Moon, Gabriel Basso as Kit, and Uriah Shelton as Hal) deliver outstanding performances, taking the audience on an emotional journey. Their chemistry together is palpable and emphasizes the strong bonds that they have formed in the face of extreme adversity.

The cinematography beautifully showcases the vastness and beauty of the natural landscapes of the southern United States. It captures the isolation and wonder of the wilderness, and the crushing bustle of modern society, highlighting the stark contrast between the two environments.

The movie also contains bold statements about anti-government sentiments and the relationship between citizens and law enforcement, which are relevant today. It shows the ramifications of unchecked power and the corrupting influence of money and the lengths some would go to attain it.

Overall, Alabama Moon is a poignant coming-of-age tale that offers up important life lessons, such as resourcefulness, determination, and loyalty in a world where technology and civilization reign supreme. The film is a thrilling and engaging adventure that keeps the audience on their toes until the very end.

Alabama Moon is a 2011 adventure movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 39 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4.
