American Strays is a dark comedy film that explores the lives of several individuals who cross paths on a single day. The film takes place in the small town of Appleton, where all the characters face a unique set of challenges that will ultimately bring them together. At the heart of the movie is a couple - Johnny and Joey - who are driving cross-country in a stolen convertible. With no real plan or direction, they end up in Appleton, where they become involved in a string of bizarre events. Along the way, they meet other drifters with their own peculiarities, including a dominatrix, a psychosexual therapist, and a hitman who's lost his mojo.

The movie jumps back and forth between the different characters' stories, revealing their individual struggles and motivations. Johnny, played by Scott Plank, is a cocky and self-assured con artist who has a way with women. However, his bravado is tested when he meets Joey, played by Melora Walters. Joey is a troubled woman searching for love and acceptance, leading her into one toxic relationship after another.

One of the other main characters is a retired hitman named Valentine, played by James Le Gros. After years of taking out targets for the mob, he's lost his edge and is struggling to find his place in the world. Another standout character is a dominatrix named Cindy, played by Jennifer Tilly. Cindy is a sexual deviant who uses her powers of persuasion to get whatever she wants.

American Strays is a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, even when dealing with heavy subject matter. The humor is dark and twisted, which may not be for everyone, but it fits the overall tone of the film. Despite the zany characters and outlandish situations, there is an underlying sense of sadness that permeates throughout the movie. Each character is searching for something they feel is missing in their life, whether it be love, identity, or purpose.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the film is the phenomenal cast. Scott Plank and Melora Walters have great onscreen chemistry, and their characters provide a much-needed sense of grounding in the midst of all the madness. John Savage, who plays a therapist, is hilarious, and Jennifer Tilly shines in her role as the kinky dominatrix.

Overall, American Strays is a quirky and unconventional film that may not be for everyone. However, those who enjoy black comedies with a touch of heart will find plenty to enjoy here. The characters are memorable, the humor is dark and twisted, and the story is compelling enough to keep you engaged from start to finish.
