Arbitrage is a 2012 financial thriller film starring Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, and Brit Marling. The movie follows the story of Robert Miller, a successful hedge fund manager who seems to have it all - a loving family, a luxurious life, and a thriving business. However, beneath the surface, Miller's world is slowly collapsing as he tries to juggle his personal life and his financial dealings.

The film opens with Miller closing a deal to sell a Russian mining company to a bank for $412 million. However, there's a catch - Miller's company is in severe debt, and the deal relies on the bank not looking too closely into his finances. Meanwhile, Miller has a mistress named Julie Cote, who is also one of his employees. Miller's relationship with Cote comes to a head when they get into a car accident that kills Cote, and he flees the scene to avoid being caught and crashing his company's stock.

Miller begins to unravel as things start to go wrong: his daughter, Brooke (played by Brit Marling), who is also his CFO, discovers discrepancies in the company's books and threatens to call off the deal if they can't be fixed. Meanwhile, NYPD detective Michael Bryer (played by Tim Roth) is investigating the car accident that killed Cote and suspects that Miller is involved. The pressure mounts as Miller tries to keep his business and personal life from imploding while the truth looms over him.

Richard Gere delivers an outstanding performance as Miller, portraying a man who's used to getting what he wants and will do anything to maintain his success. He exudes charm and confidence, but as the plot thickens, Gere masterfully shows Miller's transformation from a composed businessman to a desperate man trying to keep his secrets hidden. Susan Sarandon also shines as Miller's loyal and strong-willed wife, Ellen, who is slowly discovering the depth of her husband's lies as things spiral out of control. Brit Marling, as Miller's daughter and CFO of his company, provides a stark contrast to her father's immoral business practices with her integrity and loyalty to doing what's right, even if it means uncovering the truth about her father's misdeeds.

The film is a beautifully shot, tense and captivating thriller. Director Nicholas Jarecki does an excellent job of building the tension and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The movie's cinematography captures the wealth and glamour of Miller's life, but as his situation worsens, the lighting and framing shift to create a darker mood that reflects the character's internal turmoil. The score by Cliff Martinez is also noteworthy for its understated intensity that adds to the film's dramatic tension.

Arbitrage is a movie that will keep you engaged from start to finish, with its fast-paced plot and intriguing characters. The performances are fantastic across the board, especially that of Richard Gere, who delivers one of his best performances to date. The film offers a look into the world of high finance and illustrates the balance of power and corruption that can exist within it. Arbitrage is a must-watch film for fans of the thriller genre, as well as those who appreciate character-driven stories that explore complex ethical issues.
