Asoka is a 2001 Indian epic historical drama film directed by Santosh Sivan and starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Danny Denzongpa. The movie is based on the life of the Maurya emperor Ashoka the Great. The film is set in the third century BC, where the Mauryan Empire is in its prime under the rule of the great emperor, Bindusara. After his death, his son Susima wants to become the next ruler, but his father's trusted advisor, Chanakya, insists that his other son, Asoka, is better suited for the throne. Asoka (Shah Rukh Khan) is sent to quell an uprising in the kingdom of Kalinga, where he falls in love with the beautiful princess Kaurwaki (Kareena Kapoor).

Asoka returns to the capital with Kaurwaki, but when Susima plots against him, Asoka is forced to flee for his life.
