Ever since the days of the great fighter aces of the First World War, pilots such as Richhofen and Mannock and Ball, the fighter pilot has been a legendary figure. Tough, keen-eyed, nerves of steel, fighting it out to the death, in single combat in the skies above the battlefield. By the time of World War 2, in fighters like the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt, the speeds and g forces had more than doubled. Today's jet fighter ace has to be trained not just to withstand speeds two or three times the speed of sound, and crunching high g turns that multiply the pilot's body weight nine times, but he also has to be able to make split second decisions about a mass of information bombarding his brain, from instruments and weapons systems and ground control.
How does he cope? This programme takes you inside the tough training regime of today's top guns.
