Awaken the Dead (2007) is a low-budget independent horror film directed by Jeff Brookshire and starring Gary Kohn, Lindsey Morris, and Nate Witty. The film follows two drug addicts who inadvertently release a virus that turns people into zombie-like creatures, and a group of survivors who band together to escape the city overrun by the undead.

The movie starts with Alex (Gary Kohn) and Frank (Nate Witty), two friends who are addicted to drugs, breaking into an abandoned laboratory to steal some supplies. While inside, they accidentally release a virus that infects them and starts spreading throughout the city. As a result, the dead come back to life and start attacking and killing the living.

In the chaos that ensues, Alex and Frank team up with Jules (Lindsey Morris), a woman who is trying to find her missing daughter. Together, they must navigate the streets of the city, avoiding both the living and the undead, and looking for a way out.

As they make their way through the city, the group encounters other survivors, including a former soldier named Lewis (Christopher Wiehl) and his girlfriend, a doctor named Rachel (Kim Poirier). Together, they band together to try and find a way to escape the city and the virus that has turned so many into monsters.

The movie is a classic zombie thriller, with lots of gore, suspense, and tense moments. One thing that sets it apart from other films in the genre is its focus on the characters and their relationships with one another. The main characters all have their own motivations and backstories, and their interactions with each other provide a rich tapestry of emotions and drama that gives the film a depth and complexity that is often missing in similar movies.

Another standout feature of the film is its use of practical effects. Rather than relying on CGI to create the zombies and their attacks, the filmmakers opted for good old-fashioned prosthetics and makeup. The result is a more visceral and realistic experience that is sure to thrill fans of classic horror movies.

Overall, Awaken the Dead is a solid entry in the zombie genre that is sure to please fans of the undead. While it may not break any new ground or revolutionize the genre, it is a well-crafted and entertaining film that is worth a watch for anyone who enjoys a good scare.
