Maggie O'Connor (Kim Basinger) has a life that revolves all around her job being a nurse at the popular yet most busy hospital in all of New York. However, everything changed one rainy night when her sister Jenna O'Connor (Angela Bettis) recently abandoned her newborn autistic baby girl named Cody at her house. Maggie of course takes Cody in, where she becomes the new daughter that she never had. Maggie treats Cody as if she were her real child and they gain quite a close bond with one another. She loves Cody as if she were her actual child, and Cody really feels the love that Maggie gives.
Exactly six years have past where Jenna suddenly re-appears along with her new husband Eric (Rufus Sewell). Jenna and her husband then decide to abduct Cody (Holliston Coleman). Maggie is really weirded out on how her sister would just give Cody to her without any hesitation, but after she is already six, she decides to take her. Even though Maggie does not have any real legal rights to take care of Cody, FBI agent named John (Jimmy Smits) who is an expert with ritual murders and occult related crimes decide to take up Maggie's case when he finally realizes that Cody actually shares the same birth date as a couple other recently missing kids.
It soon becomes more clear on how Cody isn't just a "special" child, but that she manifests extraordinary powers which the many forces of evil entities have been awaiting for the past centuries to control. Her abduction sparks quite a clash between all the good soldiers and evil. This can only be fixed, in the end, by the strength of one child and her love that inspires in everything which she touches. Maggie obviously realizes that people are interested in the power that Cody possesses and so she does whatever she can to continuously protect the blessed child.
