The 2009 drama family music movie Broken Hill was written and directed by Dagen Merrill. The movie stars Alexa Vega and Timothy Hutton, and was released on September 11th of 2009. The film takes place in Australia and is about finding and trying to fulfill musical dreams. Tommy McAlpine has always dreamt of entering the music conservatory, so he could leave behind his Father's sheep farm where all his musical dreams are ridiculed. When he and spoiled rotten rich school-mate Kat are punished to do community service for their childish prank, Tommy is elected to become a training volunteer for a prison, with him unknowingly putting his punishment into a lifelong opportunity. Tommy trained the cons band to secretly premier at his college auditions composition. Constant escapee Kalai Takalua has been supporting the project, along with the unsympathetic warden. In time, many hidden agendas start to take over and several different things take place causing big trouble. Tommy deals with problems in his life and in the life of those whom he works with in his music school.
The entire film follows the young Tommy, a gifted teenage composer. His challenge is to find a great band in a very unlikely middle Outback Australia.

Broken Hill isn't just a film, it is also a location in Australia. Broken Hill is known for being an isolated city revolving on mining in the far west part of the outback of New South Wales, Australia. It is also the world's biggest mining company.
Broken Hill earned an award of the 'Best Feature Film' at a TriMedia Film Festival Whig in Fort Collins. It also won the Best Film award in the Giffoni movie Festival in Italy. It won various other awards at all kinds of film festivals.
