Career is a 1959 drama film that tells the story of actor and playwright, Maurice "Maury" Novak (played by Anthony Franciosa), who arrives in New York City with the hopes of achieving success on the Broadway stage. Through perseverance and determination, he acquires connections and eventually lands a role in a play produced by a prestigious theatrical agent, Walter Dallas (played by Dean Martin). However, due to his own ambition and shortcomings, Maurice becomes torn between success and his morality, leading him to make choices with consequences.

The film opens with Maurice arriving in New York City, where he struggles to find work as an actor. He works as a cab driver and then as an extra in a Broadway production before connecting with a theatrical agent, Margie Solitaire (played by Carolyn Jones), who becomes his love interest. Although she provides Maurice with opportunities and guidance, he quickly becomes disillusioned by the cutthroat nature of the theater world.

Maurice's fortunes change when he is given a chance to audition for Walter Dallas, who sees potential in him and casts him in a play. Maurice is then propelled into the limelight and is pulled into a world of parties, alcohol, and women. As his career begins to grow, he begins to neglect the relationships that matter most to him, including his girlfriend, Margie, and his family.

With success comes temptation, and Maurice's moral compass begins to falter. He becomes involved with a married actress, Gittel Mosca (played by Shirley MacLaine), and begins to question the authenticity of his success, leading him to make choices that have grave consequences. While he becomes lauded as a rising star, Maurice begins to lose sight of who he is and the things that truly matter.

Throughout the film, Maurice is forced to confront the reality of his choices and the people he has hurt along the way, all while struggling to stay true to himself. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including fellow actors and theatrical agents, who offer insight and advice, showing the highs and lows of the human experience.

Career explores the themes of morality, ambition, and the cost of success, showing how difficult it can be to remain true to oneself while navigating the treacherous waters of Hollywood. With a cast of talented actors, including Dean Martin, Anthony Franciosa, and Shirley MacLaine, Career is a powerful and thought-provoking drama that leaves viewers questioning the price of fame.
