Catch My Soul is a unique twist on the familiar story of Othello by William Shakespeare, set in the United States in the early 1970s. The film follows the journey of a young, black musician named Puck (played by Richie Havens) who is recruited by a charismatic preacher named Zebulon (Lance LeGault) to help with his traveling tent revival show.

Initially hesitant to join the group, Puck soon finds himself caught up in the intense energy of the religious gathering and begins to take on a prominent role in the show. However, things take a dark turn when Zebulon becomes jealous of Puck's popularity and begins to plot his downfall.

At the same time, Puck's relationship with his girlfriend, Desdemona (Season Hubley), becomes strained as he becomes increasingly involved in the religious fervor of the show. As Zebulon's jealousy grows, he manipulates events to turn Puck against Desdemona, leading to a climactic showdown between the two men.

The film features an impressive cast, including the aforementioned Richie Havens as Puck, Lance LeGault as Zebulon, and Season Hubley as Desdemona. The supporting cast is equally noteworthy, featuring appearances from Tony Joe White, Delaney Bramlett, and Susan Tyrrell.

One of the most striking elements of Catch My Soul is its unique blend of rock music and Shakespearean dialogue. The film's soundtrack features original songs from artists like Richie Havens, Delaney Bramlett, and Tony Joe White, which are woven seamlessly into the story. The incorporation of Shakespearean language, meanwhile, adds a layer of depth and complexity to the narrative, elevating it beyond a simple retelling of Othello.

The film is also notable for its visuals, which are both trippy and surreal. Director Patrick McGoohan (who is perhaps best known for his work on the television series The Prisoner) uses a variety of camera angles and lighting techniques to create an otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly complements the film's rock-infused soundtrack.

Despite its many merits, Catch My Soul was a commercial failure upon its initial release in 1974, perhaps due in part to its somewhat niche appeal. However, the film has since gained a cult following and is now regarded as a classic of its genre. Its unique combination of Shakespearean drama, rock music, and psychedelic visuals make for a truly unforgettable viewing experience.
