Chandni Bar is a critically acclaimed Hindi film released in 2001, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. It stars actress Tabu in the lead role alongside Atul Kulkarni and Rajpal Naurang Yadav. The film tells the tragic and gritty story of a young woman named Mumtaz who is forced to work in a seedy dance bar in Mumbai after losing her family to communal riots in rural India.

The film begins with Mumtaz (Tabu) leaving her village with her relatives to escape a violent riot between Hindus and Muslims. After losing her entire family, Mumtaz arrives in Mumbai with the hopes of starting a new life. She is forced to work as a waitress in a dance bar called Chandni Bar by the bar owner, Potiya (Atul Kulkarni). Mumtaz, along with other girls, performs dance numbers for the patrons of the bar. Despite her initial reluctance, Mumtaz gradually accepts her fate and begins to work hard. She eventually rises to become the lead dancer of the bar and falls in love with a customer, Sharan (Abhay Sohani).

Meanwhile, Mumtaz's life becomes more difficult as she learns about the brutal reality of the dance bar world. To keep the girls submissive, the owners force them to work long hours, dance nude, and engage in prostitution. Potiya, who initially helps Mumtaz, begins to exploit her and force her into a sexual relationship. She is also forced to deal with corrupt policemen and rival bar owners who want to take over Chandni Bar.

As Mumtaz struggles to survive and protect her daughter, she faces multiple challenges and tragedies. However, she remains determined to make a better life for herself and her daughter. The film depicts the difficult life of women in the bar and explores their struggle for survival in a male-dominated and corrupt industry.

The performances of the cast members are remarkable. Tabu delivers a powerful performance as Mumtaz, portraying the character's complexities and emotions with great nuance. Atul Kulkarni is convincing as the bar owner with a heart of stone, and Rajpal Naurang Yadav provides some lighthearted moments as the loyal and comedic friend of Mumtaz.

Madhur Bhandarkar's direction is gritty and realistic, showing the grim reality of Mumbai's underbelly with impressive authenticity. The film avoids any unnecessary glamour or melodrama, sticking to its simple and authentic approach. The story deals with sensitive themes like prostitution and corruption, but handles them in a mature and restrained manner.

The movie's soundtrack is emotionally compelling, particularly the song "Sajna Ve Sajna," which portrays the pain and longing felt by Mumtaz.

Overall, Chandni Bar is a hard-hitting and thought-provoking film that explores the lives of people on the fringes of society. It is a sensitive portrayal of the harsh realities of life and a tribute to the indomitable human spirit. The film is a must-watch for those interested in socially relevant cinema.
