Lewis (1898-1963), widely known today for his children's book series, The Chronicles of Narnia, was also one of the supreme Christian apologists, adult novelists, and literary critic-historians of the 20th century. His seemingly remote academic life also turns out to be more human and more challenging than earlier known, as shown in the biographic feature film Shadowlands (Debra Winger is interviewed in this program). It revealed that his Christianity contained amazing elements of tolerance and true charity. He had been an atheist, but when he converted to Christianity, he struggled to give it both depth and common appeal in Mere Christianity, and he wrestled with deep personal pain as seen in A Grief Observed.
