Cyborg takes place in the post apocalyptic future. The story revolves around Gibson Rickenbacker, a martial artist who fights off pirates. He is in search of a band of pirates who has killed a family that he was watching over. In his search he comes across a cyborg that is the key to a better future. The Cyborg gets taken by the pirates. Gibson then begins his search for the Cyborg.
In his search, he meets a young girl who wants to tag along. He reluctantly allows her to come with him. What follows is a series of battles which will culminate in the final confrontation between Gibson and the leader of the Pirates, Fender.
Jean Claude Van Damme stars as Gibson Rickenbacker. Other stars are Vincent Klyn, Deborah Richter and Dayle Haddon. Cyborg has undergone many changes before it became the film that was finally released. There were a lot of problems during post production which resulted in the Director getting kicked out of his own project.
A Director's Cut was released recently which features a different version of the film. One notable change is the musical score. Since the cut is in workprint form, it features music from the original composers before the studio hired another composer to do a rush job. The Director's Cut is actually no longer. It not only features no new scenes or shots other than an occasional one here and there, but one big sequence has been cut out from the Director's Cut. This version features more lines from the antagonist. It also depicts a more religious overtone. The Director's Cut does have a different and slightly darker ending.
Cyborg was released as Jean Claude Van Damme was gaining popularity as an actor.
