Daun di Atas Bantal is an Indonesian classic romantic drama film that was released in 1998. Directed by Garin Nugroho, the movie tells the story of a young love in the midst of poverty and cultural traditions that limit the couple's ability to be together. The film follows the journey of a young boy named Tari (played by Deni Christiantra) who lives in a small village in Yogyakarta. He spends most of his days fishing in the nearby river and selling his catch in the market. One day, while he is fishing, he meets a young girl named Wulan (played by Sarah Azhari), who has come to the river to bathe. They strike up a conversation, and it's clear that there is an undeniable spark between them.

As they begin to spend more time together, Tari and Wulan fall deeply in love. They dream of a future together, but their families and cultural traditions make it difficult for them to be together. Tari's family believes that he should marry a girl from a wealthy family who can help support them, while Wulan's family wants her to focus on her education and become a teacher. They are also forbidden from seeing each other as their respective villages have a long-standing rivalry.

Despite these challenges, Tari and Wulan continue to meet in secret and dream of a future together. They talk about their hopes and aspirations, and plan to run away to Jakarta to start a new life. However, their plans are derailed when Wulan's father finds out about their relationship and sends her away to Jakarta to study.

Distraught and heartbroken, Tari tries to continue on with his life, but he cannot forget Wulan. He decides to follow her to Jakarta and try to win her back. In the big city, Tari meets a group of street performers led by a talented female singer named Mbah Sri (played by Christine Hakim). She takes Tari and his friends under her wing and helps them make a living by performing in the streets.

As Tari tries to navigate life in the city, he is haunted by memories of Wulan and the love they shared. Will he be able to find her and win her back, or will they both be forced to move on and accept their fate?

Daun di Atas Bantal is a beautifully crafted film that explores themes of love, tradition, and poverty. The stunning cinematography captures the beauty of rural Indonesia, while the heartfelt performances by the film's talented cast bring the story to life. The film's use of Javanese poetry and music adds an extra layer of depth and emotion to the story, making it a must-watch for fans of Indonesian cinema.
