Ving Rhames, Nick Cannon and Mena Suvari star in this remake of George A. Romero's classic third installment in the "Dead" series. As in the original, a group of military personnel must fight an army of the undead to survive. The film is different from the original film in that in the original, most of the movie takes place in an underground mine shaft which is converted into a secure shelter away from the flesh-eating undead. In the remake, the film is mostly above ground; starting off with the typical "mystery-virus" spreading across a Colorado town. Confusion sets in as to whether or not it's all a military test or if it's real. Upon a trip to the hospital by a few of our secondary characters, we learn that the threat is very real as sick patients die, then return to life and attack the living, causing chaos and bloodshed. Unlike the original, slow-moving zombies of the original Romero film's, these zombies are more hip and move quick, even cat-like at times. Rhames, Suvari and Cannon; all military members get intersected with the secondary cast in the hospital as they struggle to escape the ever-growing horde of undead.

The group eventually finds themselves in a military edition hummer constantly on the run as bases have become overrun with the undead and they have fewer and fewer options for shelter. At one point in the film, our secondary characters find refuge at a small, local radio station in another nearby town. Eventually this safe haven is taken over and the DJ is killed along with a few other people as one of our secondary characters is forced to kill his own mother who is now... a zombie.

Later in the film, we get back to the roots of the Romero original as the group reunites in an underground lab where they find a video tape made by a scientist explaining what is happening and why it has happened. In the midst of the calm, they discover this scientist is now a zombie and a very cunning one at that, almost a "master-zombie". As the group struggles to fight this master-zombie, dozens of undead get into the underground bunker, sending the group in a fight for survival. Eventually, the group escapes the bunker but not before blowing it up and getting away; of course not without losing a few people in the process.

The film ends with a few survivors driving away, but not before we get one last good scare as a zombie jumps onto the hood of the car.
