Dimenticare Palermo, a political thriller movie from 1990, stars Jim Belushi as Carmine Bonavia, the adopted son of a wealthy Italian-American family who unexpectedly becomes the foreign minister in his birth country of Sicily. When Bonavia tries to use his position to bring peace to the warring factions of Sicily, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous web of political and criminal intrigue.

The movie opens with Bonavia arriving in Palermo, Sicily, for a meeting with the foreign minister. He is accompanied by his wife, Jess (played by Mimi Rogers), and after the meeting, they are taken on a tour of the city. As they drive through the streets, Bonavia is shocked by the poverty and violence he sees. He is determined to do something to help the people of Sicily, but he quickly learns that the situation is more complicated than he imagined.

Bonavia's first challenge comes when he tries to arrange a meeting between the leaders of the two warring factions in Sicily. One of the leaders, Vanni (played by Joss Ackland), is in prison, and the other, Salvo (played by Philippe Noiret), is hiding in France. Bonavia meets with Vanni in prison, and they seem to find common ground. However, when Vanni is released from prison, he is assassinated, and Bonavia realizes that he is in way over his head.

The plot thickens as Bonavia tries to uncover the truth behind Vanni's murder. He meets a beautiful journalist, Lia (played by Barbara De Rossi), who helps him navigate the dangerous world of Sicilian politics. Together, they discover that Vanni's murder was part of a larger conspiracy involving the government, the mafia, and foreign powers.

As Bonavia gets closer to the truth, he becomes the target of multiple assassination attempts. His marriage to Jess also begins to suffer as she becomes increasingly weary of the danger and begins to question his motives. The tension builds as Bonavia faces betrayal from those he trusts and the possibility of losing everything he holds dear.

The ending of the movie is both surprising and satisfying. The mystery behind Vanni's murder is solved, and Bonavia is able to attend a peace conference that he had been working towards throughout the film. However, the price he pays for his success is high, and the final scene of the movie leaves the viewer with a mix of emotions.

Dimenticare Palermo was directed by Francesco Rosi and written by Gore Vidal. The film was shot in Palermo, Sicily, giving it an authentic feel. Jim Belushi gives a powerful performance as the idealistic, yet flawed, Carmine Bonavia. Mimi Rogers, Joss Ackland, and the rest of the cast also deliver strong performances.

Overall, Dimenticare Palermo is a compelling political thriller that explores the complex world of Sicilian politics. It is a well-crafted movie that keeps the viewer engaged from beginning to end. The story is both thought-provoking and entertaining, and the acting is top-notch. If you enjoy political movies, then Dimenticare Palermo is definitely worth a watch.
