When Dona Flor is left widowed by the sudden death of her handsome husband Vadinho her friends see this as a chance for her to find a better man than the irresponsible unemployed gambler. She does just that, marrying the dull Doctor Teodoro, who is respectable and stable. In flashbacks we see what her friends could not; that the two men are opposites in another way, and that the passion and sexual awakening that she experienced with Vadinho are utterly lacking with Dr. Teodoro. When she is visited by Vadinho's ghost life gets interesting.
