Dum Maaro Dum is an Indian suspense thriller movie that was released in 2011. This movie follows multiple storylines that all revolve around the drug culture in the party city of Goa. Dum Maaro Dum stars Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu, and Prateik Babbar in leading roles. The movie is directed by Rohan Sippy. The film tells the story of a neglected wife, Zoe (played by Bipasha Basu), whose husband is deployed in the Indian Army. She falls for a local musician Lorry (played by Prateik Babbar) and gets caught up in the drug world to offer a better life to her son. Indeed, he is her only hope for her life. At the same time, ACP Vishnu Kamath (played by Abhishek Bachchan) is assigned to take down the drug mafia. Kamath, a passionate yet recklessly wild police officer, devises an innovative plan to catch the drug lords red-handed. Back in Goa, Joki (played by Rana Daggubati) – a former student turned DJ – becomes an innocent victim of this game.

Starting with the opening shot of the film, the Goan setting is breathtaking, and the director has done an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of Goa. From the trance parties to the sunny beaches, and from the shady lanes of slums to the luxurious clubs of Goa, every scene in the movie is shot beautifully. The landscapes are catchy and showcase Goa's lesser-seen side.

The characters in the movie are like the white of the paper and the black of the ink; each full of respective grey shades. The director has done an excellent job of keeping a fine balance in the characterization, allowing each to portray both positive and negative traits. The film’s plot is atypical of the Indian cinema, and the storyline is compelling enough to keep you hooked from beginning to end.

Bachchan's character is intense, and he makes the role of the daredevil cop look easy. The plot that revolves around Kamath is the most gripping of all. He is a no-nonsense, honest police officer who is engaged in a wild chase with the drug dealers. Kamath's dialogue delivery is perfect and full of wit, and his style is enough to keep you engaged. Abhishek Bachchan has done complete justice to his role in the movie, which was praised by both audiences and critics.

Deepika Padukone's short but significant presence in the movie is essential. She plays the role of a mysterious woman, who is on the run from her past. Her role in the movie also puts light on the plight of female tourists in a male-dominated society in Goa. She exudes glamour and is a delight to watch.

Bipasha Basu has done an excellent job of portraying a mother's pain, sacrifice and grit. Her character evolution from a neglected wife to a mother with a mission is seamless. She remains sensibly sober in her acting and is attractive in every frame.

The music of Dum Maaro Dum is another highlight of the movie. The film's title song "Dum Maaro Dum" is an iconic track, and the latest version of the song adds to the charm of the movie. Similarly, "Thayn Thayn" and "Jiyein Kyun" are engaging and have their niches in the movie.

Overall, Dum Maaro Dum is a multi-layered movie that explores the intersection between smuggling drugs and exploiting the local populace. The film's climax is emotionally charged and intense, though it ends abruptly, leaving a lot of questions unanswered. Nevertheless, Dum Maaro Dum is an engaging and entertaining movie, all thanks to its engaging and gripping storyline, commendable performances by his A-list cast, and upbeat music.

Dum Maaro Dum is a 2011 drama. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2.
