Eight Below is an adventure/drama released by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie is adapted from a true life Antarctic expedition with snow dogs that happened back in 1958. The story is filled with filled with action and drama while staying family friendly. In the movie we find UCLA professor, Dr. Davis McClaren arriving at the Antarctic research base that is under contract with the National Science Foundation so that he can request help getting to Mount Melbourne. He is searching for a meteorite from Mercury that is exceptionally rare. Jerry Shepard is a guide at the base and he feels it is too late in the season to make the expedition. He goes against his better judgement but insists on taking a dog sled and not the snowmobiles.
The two men and their dog sled make it to Mount Melbourne but they barely arrive and are called back because of an impending storm. Dr. McClaren begs Jerry for a bit more time so that he can make his rare find. Jerry gives him only a half a day. Just in time the doctor finds what he is searching for and they head back to the sled that will take them back to the base. The dogs are in bad shape and the two men end up in several near death experiences on their way back to the base. They finally arrive and everyone is ordered to evacuate because of the intense storm. Unfortunately there is no room on the plane for the dogs and the only way Jerry leaves is with a promise that they will return for them.
Once they are to safety Jerry realizes the storm has gotten much worse and that there will be no rescue attempt for the dogs until spring. He is heartbroken. Will the dogs still be alive in Spring? You must watch in order to find out!
