Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted is a modern day fantasy fairy tale the whole family can enjoy. The film is based upon the Newbery Honored children's novel, of the same name, by Gail Carson Levine. At times the film pokes fun at the fairy tale genre and also has roots of a romantic comedy. The story of Ella Enchanted takes place in the fictitious fantasy kingdom of Frell. As a Baby Ella is visited by her loud mouthed, obnoxious fairy godmother Lucinda who has heart in the right place but often makes ridiculously horrible decisions. During the visit Lucinda gives Ella the "gift of obedience", although throughout the plot of the movie it proves to be more of an anti gift or curse. As a result of Lucinda's "gift" when Ella is told to do something she loses control of her actions and magically performs any task that is asked of her. Later on in her childhood Ella's father remarries and Ella receives a stepmother and 2 stepsisters, the stepmother and stepsisters are essentially spoofs on the evil stepmother and stepsister in the fairy tale Cinderella. Upon realizing Ella's "gift" her stepsisters use it against her constantly while growing up to essentially make Ella's life miserable.

Later in her life when she becomes a fully grown woman Ella meets Prince Charmont the attractive young heir to Frell's throne. Ella and Prince Charmont begin to develop feelings for each other, however Ella's stepsisters become jealous and want to develop a relationship with the young Prince themselves so they misuse Ella's "gift" to end Ella's relationship with Prince Charmont before it even starts. Finally Ella becomes fed up with everyone using her "gift" to mistreat her and make a mockery of her life. So she sets out on a journey across Frell to track down Lucinda and reverse the spell she cast upon her, so she can win back Prince Charmont and they can live happily ever after.

Ella Enchanted boast's a magnificent cast. Starring as Ella is Anne Hathaway. One of best performances of the film is from Vivica A. Fox in her hilarious portrayal of the fairy godmother Lucinda. Other starring roles include Hugh Dancy as Prince Charmont, Cary Elwes as Sir Edgar, and Patrick Bergin as Sir Peter. Ella's narcissist stepsisters are masterfully played by Lucy Punch, who plays Hattie, and Jennifer Higham, who plays Olive. World renowned super model Hedi Klum also has a small role in the film playing a giantess named Brumhilda.
