Encore is a collection of three separate stories, each with a unique plot and characters. Directed by Harold French and released in 1951, Encore features well-known actors Nigel Patrick, Roland Culver, and Alison Leggatt. The first of the three stories, "The Anticipatory Corpse," is a humorous tale about a man named George (Roland Culver) who fakes his own death to avoid his creditors. However, things quickly spiral out of control when his secretary (Kay Walsh) decides to write and publish his memoirs. The story is full of witty dialogue and clever twists, as George struggles to keep his scheme from falling apart.

The second story, "The Way to the Stars," is a more serious drama about a World War II airman named Peter Penrose (John Mills) and his romance with a WAAF officer named Miss Todd (Renée Asherson). The two meet at an RAF training base and begin a whirlwind romance. However, when Peter is shot down over Germany and presumed dead, Miss Todd must come to terms with her loss and move on with her life. The story is a poignant portrayal of love and loss during wartime.

The final story, "Yellow Canary," is a suspenseful thriller about a British woman named Sally (Anna Neagle) who is accused of spying for the Germans during World War II. As she awaits trial, Sally must fight to prove her innocence and clear her name. Nigel Patrick gives a standout performance as the lawyer who takes on Sally's case, risking his own reputation in the process.

Overall, Encore is a well-crafted collection of stories that showcases the talents of its talented cast and director. The film seamlessly weaves together humor, drama, and suspense, making for a satisfying viewing experience. The stories are all set during World War II, giving the film a sense of time and place that adds depth to the characters' struggles and triumphs.

Despite being over 70 years old, Encore still holds up as a timeless classic. Its themes of love, loss, and redemption are universal, making it a film that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. If you're a fan of classic cinema or just looking for a well-crafted movie with great acting and storytelling, then Encore is definitely worth a watch.
