Enigma is a historical drama film that follows the story of Tom Jericho, a British cryptanalyst, who is trying to crack the Nazi's Enigma code during WWII. The film is set in Bletchley Park, the code-breaking center in England. The movie starts with Tom returning to Bletchley Park after suffering from a nervous breakdown. Tom was working on the German's Enigma code before he had the breakdown, and the code was changed after he left. When he returns, he finds that one of his colleagues, Claire Romilly, has gone missing. She was a cryptanalyst at Bletchley Park, and Tom has a secret relationship with her.

Tom is determined to solve the new code and find Claire. He works with Hester Wallace, a young woman, who is also a cryptanalyst. Hester is not well-liked by the other analysts since she taught herself how to solve codes instead of being trained for it. Tom and Hester get closer as they work together, and Tom starts to suspect that Hester knows more about Claire's disappearance than she is letting on.

Meanwhile, the war is raging on, and the Nazis are winning. The British government is aware that the Germans are aware of the code-breaking efforts in Bletchley Park, and they fear that the Germans might change the codes, making it impossible for the analysts to decode their messages. The government decides to keep the successes of the code-breakers hidden from the public, to avoid giving any clue to the Germans that their codes might have been compromised.

As Tom and Hester work on decoding the new Enigma, they discover something that could change the course of the war. They come across a message that suggests that a U-boat is heading towards a convoy of ships, which, if destroyed, could have a significant impact on the war outcome. But there is a problem; they can't decipher the location where the U-boat will attack. Tom's superiors are skeptical of the information, and they do not act upon it. Tom decides to take matters into his own hands, and he goes on a mission to find the location of the U-boat.

As Tom gets closer to decoding the Enigma, he begins to uncover secrets about Claire's disappearance, and the truth is revealed in the most unexpected way. The ending of the movie is emotional, and it leaves the audience thinking about how much sacrifice and hard work went into winning the war.

The acting in the movie is excellent, and the chemistry between Tom and Hester is spot on. Dougray Scott delivers an exceptional performance as Tom, portraying his mental struggles and his determination to solve the code. Kate Winslet shines as Hester, bringing out the character's depth and intelligence.

The film's production design and cinematography are top-notch, capturing the feel and look of the time and place. The sets in Bletchley Park are detailed and accurate, giving the audience a glimpse of what life was like for the cryptanalysts.

Overall, Enigma is a well-written and well-executed film that captures the intrigue of code-breaking during WWII. The film offers a historical perspective on the sacrifices made by the code-breakers to win the war, and it leaves the audience with a sense of respect and admiration for their efforts.

Enigma is a 2001 mystery with a runtime of 1 hour and 59 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 64.
