Evening is a 2007 American drama film directed by Lajos Koltai and based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Susan Minot. The film features an ensemble cast of Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collette, Claire Danes, Patrick Wilson, Hugh Dancy, Natasha Richardson, Mamie Gummer, Eileen Atkins, and Glenn Close. The story is told in flashbacks as Ann Grant Lord, played by Vanessa Redgrave, lies on her deathbed, plagued by memories of the past. As she delves into her past, she recalls a weekend in her youth when she was a bridesmaid for her best friend Lila, played by Mamie Gummer. It was during this weekend at a beach house in Rhode Island that she met the man who would become her true love, Harris Arden, played by Patrick Wilson.

As Ann reminisces, the audience is transported back to the 1950s as they witness the blossoming romance between Ann and Harris. However, Ann's relationship with Harris is complicated when she discovers that he is engaged to be married to her friend, Lila. This heartbreaking realization leads Ann to make a decision that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Throughout the movie, the audience is also introduced to Ann's Daughters, Constance, played by Natasha Richardson, and Nina, played by Toni Collette. While their mother is on her deathbed, Constance and Nina come to visit and it is through their interactions with their mother that we learn more about Ann's past. We discover that Ann once had a passionate affair with a doctor named Harris, played by Patrick Wilson. Their romance leads Ann to make a difficult decision that she carries with her throughout her life.

As the film progresses, the stories of Ann and her daughters begin to weave together, creating a complicated tapestry of love, loss, and regret. Through flashbacks and conversations with her daughters, Ann comes to terms with her past and prepares to let go of the wounds that have haunted her for so long.

Evening is a slow-paced, introspective film that explores themes of regret, love, and loss. Director Lajos Koltai does an excellent job of creating a melancholy and dreamlike atmosphere, which is further complemented by the stunning cinematography from Gyula Pados. The cast also delivers standout performances, particularly Vanessa Redgrave, who imbues Ann with a quiet pain and regret that is both powerful and heartbreaking. Natasha Richardson's portrayal of Constance is also noteworthy, as she bravely confronts her own mortality and grapples with her relationship with her mother.

Overall, Evening is a thoughtful and emotional film that will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced the pain of love and loss. While the plot may seem simple on the surface, it is the depth of the characters and the complexity of their relationships that really make this film stand out.

Evening is a 2007 drama. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 45.
