Failure To Launch is a romantic comedy that stars Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. McConaughey plays Tripp, a man in his thirties who still lives at home with his parents and allows them to take care of him. Tripp's parents are not happy with the situation, so they hire an expert whose goal is to get grown men to leave their parents' home.
Paula is the expert, and she devises an elaborate plan to get these men to move out of their parents' home. Paula gets the guys to fall in love with her and fix problems in her life so their self-confidence grows and they get desire to move out.
Paula's expertise does not work on Tripp. Tripp has no desire to fall in love, and his self-esteem is fine. He is just enjoying the luxury of living at his parents' house. He tries to break up with Paula, but she will not allow it. She ends up staying at his parents' house with him.
Paula soon finds out that Tripp was engaged many years ago, but his fiancée died. Tripp has been staying with his family for the emotional support ever since. Paula's roommate believes that Paula is using her job as an excuse to stay out of relationships. Paula's roommate then tells one of Tripp's friends what Paula is really about, and he promptly tells Tripp. Tripp confronts Paula and, furious with his parents, he moves out.
Tripp's friends realize that Paula really loves Tripp, so they come up with a plan to get the couple back together. They lock the two of them in a room where Paula confesses her true feelings for Tripp to him. Tripp's façade breaks down, and the two of them get back together. The film ends with them sailing away and Tripp's parents rejoicing in having their home back.
