Friday tells the story of a day in the life of two close friends, Craig and Smokey, as they spend the day relaxing on Craig's front porch and getting into adventures around the neighborhood. Craig and Smokey are both low on cash but eager to find a good time and meet girls so the movie follows the two guys around as they look for fun on a budget. It also shows them dealing with the hassles of nagging parents, noisy siblings, and persistent neighborhood drug dealers. In the beginning of the movie, Craig has just lost his job so he is depressed.
Craig and Smokey both love to smoke pot and much of the movie is spent showing them toking up and laughing at the silly things around them. The South Central neighborhood where the guys live is rife with crackheads and thieves and other untrustworthy characters. The boys deal with these people in a comedic fashion and do their best not to get caught up in their drama. The guys unfortunately owe their drug dealer money and, as they have no jobs, they have to come up with creative ways to get the money. The drug dealer wants $200 cash by 10pm so the boys spend all trying out various plans. The boys scheme and hustle throughout the entire movie. They try to get their parents to loan them money, no luck. They work on their girlfriends and Craig's sister too but no one takes pity on the boys' plight. Through all their adventures, Craig never loses his cool doing his best to pay back the dealer and keep his friend Smokey calm.
Friday is a buddy comedy and the goal of the film is to keep the audience laughing throughout. Craig, played by Ice Cube, is a solid, average guy while his friend Smokey, played by Chris Tucker, is the one who seems to get the pair in the most trouble. The film also feautures performances by Nia Long, Regina King, and the late Bernie Mac in a cameo appearance. Because of the ample amounts of discussion of weed-smoking, many viewers consider Friday to be a stoner comedy. It is also the first in a trilogy of the films starring Ice Cube and Christ Tucker. The film was released in 1995 and it runs 91 minutes. It was directed by F. Gary Gray and it was written by the star Ice Cube as well.
