From the Rough is based on a true story about the first black woman to ever coach an all men's team on a collegiate level. Tennessee State University which was an all black university had an excellent rating in every area of their athletic department. The only sport that the university did not engage in was golf so the board decided to establish a golf team. No one wanted to coach such a team but there was one who was courageous enough to step up and accept the challenge. She could not find many students on campus that were interested in the sport so she went international and recruited some players.

Her team consisted of guys from different cultures and backgrounds that had little to no experience in golfing. She and her team faced many adversities. She was a black woman, short in stature, had unskilled team players and received no support from the board of the university. However, there was only one person that believed in her, a janitor at the school. He advised her and pushed her along the way.

From the Rough is a 2014 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6.
