Gangaajal is a Hindi-language crime drama film released in 2003 that stars Ajay Devgn, Gracy Singh, and Mohan Joshi in prominent roles. The film is directed by Prakash Jha, who is well known for his socially relevant films. Gangaajal is regarded as one of his best works. The story is set in the fictional district of Tezpur in Bihar, where crime is rampant, and the politicians and police officers are hand in glove. The film opens with a horrifying incident where a group of policemen brutally beat up a young boy in public for no apparent reason. The boy dies, and the incident sparks a wave of protests in the city.

To control the mob, SP Amit Kumar (Ajay Devgn) is sent to Tezpur. He is an honest and fearless police officer who believes in the rule of law. Amit Kumar's arrival causes a stir in the police department, where the officers are not used to an honest cop. On his very first day, he clashes with the SHO of the local police station, who is corrupt and involved in criminal activities.

Amit Kumar soon realizes that the district is under the control of the local MLA Sadhu Yadav (Mohan Joshi), who is also an underworld don. The police department is merely his puppet, and the officers follow his orders. In this situation, Amit Kumar decides to take matters into his own hands and clean up the mess.

He gets into a cat and mouse game with Sadhu Yadav, who tries every trick in the book to eliminate him. Amit Kumar also has to deal with internal threats, where his fellow police officers, who are part of Sadhu Yadav's gang, try to sabotage his efforts.

The turning point comes when a group of Sadhu Yadav's men brutally rape and murder a young girl. Amit Kumar is enraged, and he decides to take matters into his own hands. He gets the support of the common people, who are sick of the corrupt system. Amit Kumar is now on a mission to bring the criminals to justice, even if it means going against the system.

The movie's title, Gangaajal, is a metaphor for the purity of truth that has the power to wash away all sins. The film tackles the theme of police corruption and crime in society, and how one honest cop can make a difference. The movie is also a commentary on the Indian political system, where politicians and criminals work together for their benefit.

Ajay Devgn delivers a power-packed performance as Amit Kumar, the fearless cop who takes on the corrupt system. He portrays his character's dilemma and inner conflict with subtlety and nuance. Gracy Singh, who is known for her role in Lagaan, plays a journalist who helps Amit Kumar in his quest for justice. Mohan Joshi is excellent as the villainous MLA, who is evil and corrupt to the core.

The movie's soundtrack is composed by Sandesh Shandilya and is a mix of soulful and energetic tracks. The song "Jo Haal Dil Ka" is a standout track that captures the essence of the movie's theme.

Overall, Gangaajal is a hard-hitting film that makes a lasting impact on the viewer. The movie is a must-watch for anyone interested in socially relevant cinema. It is a reminder that one person can make a difference and change the course of history.
