A young Billie is first seen a nightclub with her mother, who is a singer. Her mother has trouble paying all the bills and goes to visit Billie's father. He quickly rushes them off with a little bit of money. Billie's mother falls asleep with a lit cigerette that soon catches the apartment on fire. The fire causes social services to come in and remove Billie who is promised that once her mother gets her affairs in order, she will come back for Billie. This never happens and the film flashes forward to the older Billie.

Billie, in her adult years, is going to dance at a club with her friends when she is met by a man who offers her a contract. She signs the contract with her friends, and they become dancers and backup singers for a woman. She is then noticed by a man who puts her on the spot while working as a DJ at a local night club. He asks her to belt out a note which sends his head spinning. He cannot believe how good she is. He then approaches her about becoming her manager. He promises her that he can get her released from her previous obligation. He does, and he goes on to make her a hit. With this comes trouble.

Dice, the manager, makes a promise to her previous manager, who then becomes violent with him. Fights arise and some threats take place. In the meantime, Billie and Dice experience their own troubles. She leaves and separates from him. While being separated, they stay in touch with one another and when she is to perform on the late night show, she gets the news that he was shot and died. She then starts to search for her mother, who she goes to visit in order to make amends for the past choices.
