Gothic is a horror film from 1986 directed by Ken Russell, which tells the story of a dark and stormy night in the summer of 1816, when five famous writers gathered in a secluded mansion in Switzerland to tell ghost stories and challenge each other's imaginations. The film starts with the arrival of the writers at the Villa Diodati, and introduces us to Mary Shelley (Natasha Richardson), the author of the famous novel Frankenstein; her husband Percy Shelley (Julian Sands), Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne), his friend Claire Clairmount (Myriam Cyr) and Dr. John Polidori (Timothy Spall), Byron's personal physician and aspiring writer.

As the night grows darker and the storm rages on, the group begins to tell stories of horror and terror, and the lines between reality and imagination start to blur. The film uses vivid and unsettling imagery to depict the writers' tales as they become more vivid and disturbing. The atmosphere of horror is further heightened by the eerie setting of the mansion, with its creaky floors and shadowy corners.

As the night progresses, the writers become increasingly intoxicated and reckless, delving deeper into their own fears and madness. They begin to question whether they are actually experiencing the supernatural occurrences they are huddled together to combat or whether it is all in their minds. The boundaries between their reality and the supernatural become increasingly blurred, and the writers are consumed by their dark imaginations.

Gabriel Byrne's portrayal of Lord Byron is particularly memorable; he exudes a debonair charm and sexual charisma which contrasts scarily with the lack of morals that his character has. His performance is both nuanced and flamboyant, demonstrating a sense of command and presence that strengthens the sense of horror in the film's atmosphere.

Natasha Richardson's portrayal of Mary Shelley is also noteworthy; she brings a quiet intensity to the role, and her subtle body language communicates a deep sense of pain and sorrow — the same pain and sorrow that would later shape her literary masterpiece, Frankenstein.

Throughout the film, the stunning cinematography by Mike Southon and the use of dramatic lighting and color, accentuates the horror and claustrophobia of the situation, leaving the audience breathless, anxious and waiting for the next scare.

Gothic is a film which uses horror to explore the connection between creativity, madness, and the dark psyche of some of our most celebrated writers. In a way, the film is almost an ode to the horror genre itself, as it deftly blends the supernatural and the psychological to create a unique and memorable cinematic experience that stands the test of time.

Gothic is a 1987 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7.
