In the summer of 1968, a young man named Claude (John Savage) enlists in the Army and is shipped off to basic training. Before he leaves, he meets a group of hippies in Central Park, including the charismatic Berger (Treat Williams) and the beautiful Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo). Claude is drawn to their carefree lifestyle and their passionate opposition to the Vietnam War.

After basic training, Claude is sent to Vietnam, where he witnesses the horrors of war firsthand. Meanwhile, Berger and Sheila and the rest of their hippie friends continue their protest efforts back in New York City. When Claude returns home on leave, he reunites with his friends and becomes more disillusioned with the war effort.

As the summer of 1968 progresses, tensions rise between the hippies and the police, culminating in a violent confrontation during a massive anti-war protest. Despite the chaos and tragedy around them, Claude and his friends remain determined to make a difference and live their lives on their own terms.
