Hard to Be a God is an epic science fiction film directed by Aleksei German and released in 1989. The movie takes place on a distant planet, where scientists from Earth have been observing a civilization that is somewhere between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The planet, however, is constantly repressed by totalitarian forces and steeped in filth and disease. A group of Earth scientists, dressed in local attire to blend in, have made it their mission to just observe and educate, rather than to intervene in the planet's affairs.

The film follows the character of Don Rumata, played by Edward Zentara, one of the Earth scientists who has been on this planet for years. Rumata is a god-like figure, feared and respected by the locals who believe he possesses magical powers, but who in reality has been instructed to merely observe and not get involved. He wanders the streets of the planet's medieval, plague-ridden cities, watching as the locals struggle to survive and express their cultural and artistic selves while being ruthlessly oppressed by their rulers.

The plot mainly revolves around a power struggle between two opposing forces- the local aristocracy, and the black-clad, heavily armed Reformation. Rumata is caught in the middle of a violent conflict between the two groups, as the aristocracy, fearful of the Reformation's power, hold the power of Rumata's virtual godhood over their enemies as a means of control. They use his alleged divinity to convince the Reformation of their legitimacy, even as the Reformation ruthlessly takes over their territory and enforces their own brutal rule.

As the film progresses, we see how Rumata is often torn between his moral obligation to the planet and the need to maintain his disguise as a "god." He's aware that he could intervene to save people and change the status quo, but his orders are to only observe, not to upset the planet's complex and fragile balance. Moreover, his connection to the locals has made him deeply empathize with them and their plight, but he can't let these feelings guide his actions. His role of an observer is put to the test as the violence between the two factions escalate and reaches a boiling point. Rumata begins to question the point of their peaceful observation when the situation becomes critical and he's informed by others in his team that they're considering intervention.

The movie is visually stunning and features gritty, grotesque, and brutal imagery throughout its runtime. The cinematography is an important element that makes the film so memorable. The environments depicted are dense and overwhelming, with detailed set pieces that immerse the viewer in a truly alien world filled with mud, excrement, and decay. The camera often lingers on grotesque and unsettling details, producing a feeling of disorientation and disgust in some scenes.

The themes of the movie are multilayered, and to some extent mirrors Soviet-era Russia. The film shows how despotic systems use religious or magical beliefs as a tool of control, and how the lack of intervention from the outside world when it is clearly needed, can lead to tragedy. It also explores the dilemma of observation (and by extension, research) versus intervention and the ethical dimensions of such a decision. The film is a rare example of 'cognitive dissonance' as it presents the viewer with equal frustration towards the scientist's neutral and powerless stand and the subsequent need to remain impotent in the face of inhumanity.

In conclusion, Hard to be a God is a masterpiece, and a timeless one at that. Its critical examination of power structures and ethical dilemmas, as well as its dense, immersive visual style, make it a must-see for fans of dystopian or existential sci-fi. The tension never wavers, the conflict never eases, and the finale that the viewers have waited for the entire length of the movie is perfectly poised, grim, and thought-provoking. Its a movie that leaves a lasting impression once the end credits roll.
