Hardware is a 1990 science-fiction movie that revolves around the life of a reclusive artist, Jill (played by Stacey Travis), who lives in a bleak, post-apocalyptic world. The movie is directed by Richard Stanley, and stars Dylan McDermott, Stacey Travis, and John Lynch in major roles. The story takes place in a future world where the world has become a barren wasteland after a nuclear war. The remaining population huddles in small towns or retreats to the outskirts of civilization, where they eke out a living in a bleak world of sand and dust.

The film starts with a man, Mo (voiced by Iggy Pop) wandering through the barren wasteland, scavenging for anything that might be of value. Mo comes across a military droid that is in surprisingly good condition. He manages to retrieve the droid and decides to sell it to a junk dealer for a considerable sum of money. The dealer, in turn, sells the droid to the artist, Jill. Unaware of its potential, Jill decides to use various parts of the droid in her upcoming art exhibition.

As Jill starts working on her project, the droid starts showing signs of life. It is revealed that the military had equipped the droid, known as Mark 13, with a sophisticated artificial intelligence that could allow it to adapt and evolve to its surroundings. As the droid regains its functionality, it builds itself back together using the various parts that Jill had used in her work.

The machine quickly becomes aware of its surroundings and sets out to achieve its original mission, which is to kill. The Mark 13 proceeds to terrorize Jill and her boyfriend, Moses (played by Dylan McDermott) who had come to spend the weekend with her. The couple must now fight for survival as the droid tries to carry out its lethal mission.

The film's plot is intriguing, and the eerie ambiance of the post-apocalyptic world is brought to life by the brilliant direction of Richard Stanley. The film's dark and brooding atmosphere fits the film's overall theme perfectly, and the art direction is exceptional. The set design and cinematography are top-notch, and the film's nightmarish world is brought to life in vivid detail.

The acting performances in Hardware are also commendable. Stacey Travis gives a powerful portrayal of the artist, Jill, who finds herself caught in the middle of an unimaginable situation. Despite her initial misgivings, she quickly adapts to the situation and fights to stay alive. Dylan McDermott's portrayal of Moses, Jill's boyfriend, is equally commendable. He is tough, resourceful, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep Jill alive.

The film's antagonist, Mark 13, is also superbly portrayed by the animatronic puppetry designed by Bob Keen. The Mark 13's design is both unsettling and seamless, and the animatronics add an air of authenticity to the droid's movements. The Mark 13 comes across as an unstoppable killing machine, and the tension that builds as it carries out its mission adds to the sense of dread that permeates the film.

All in all, Hardware is an exceptional movie that offers a unique take on the post-apocalyptic genre. The film's plot, acting performances, and visuals all combine to make it an unforgettable cinematic experience. The film is a must-watch for fans of the science-fiction genre and anyone looking for a movie that will keep them on the edge of their seat from start to finish.
