Harishchandrachi Factory is a 2009 Indian Marathi-language film, directed by Paresh Mokashi. The movie follows the journey of Dadasaheb Phalke (Nandu Madhav), the father of Indian cinema, as he sets out to make his first film. Set in the early 20th century, when cinema was still a new and unexplored medium, the story begins with Phalke's frustration at not being able to find a suitable job in his old age. It is during this time that he comes across a film screening by the Lumière Brothers and is struck by the potential of this medium.

Inspired and determined, Phalke decides to make a film of his own, but faces numerous obstacles along the way. He has to fight against the social stigma attached to acting in films, as well as lack of local technical expertise and funding. He even has to resort to selling his wife's jewellery to finance his venture. But with the help of his son, friends, and a devoted team, Phalke finally manages to make Raja Harishchandra, the first-ever Indian full-length feature film.

Throughout the film, the audience witnesses the challenges that Phalke had to face to complete his venture. The crew had no prior knowledge in making movies and practically started from scratch. Phalke struggles to find sponsors, fights against the prejudices of the society surrounding the industry, all these impeding the journey of his passion for making a film. The portrayal of the difficulties faced during the initial stages of film production adds to the realism and relatability of the story. This was a time before the industry had a firm grasp on storytelling through motion pictures.

The movie showcases the sacrifices that Phalke had to make to pursue his passion, including selling his wife's jewelry providing the necessary funding for the film. It also shows the support of his wife Saraswati (Vibhawari Deshpande). The film displays her loyalty, sacrifices, and support throughout the movie, emphasizing her important role in the making of this significant milestone in Indian history.

Nandu Madhav's portrayal of Phalke is fantastic. His acting skills enhanced the character further, bringing out the nuances of the character's struggles and determination. Through impeccable acting skills, Madhav delivers a true and resonating portrayal of Phalke, taking the audience through the protagonist's tumultuous journey.

Harishchandrachi Factory does not limit itself to the story of the film's production. It provides viewers with an insight into the historical and social background of the time period, with fantastic cinematography of locations such as Girgaum, Bombay of the early 20th century, and natural-looking costumes. Moreover, the movie offers a glimpse into the dichotomy of Indian society, with its acceptance of the same sex when it comes to acting in plays in the theatre, but present social barriers that break down when transitioning to the motion picture world, adding depth to the storyline.

One of the notable aspects of the movie is the attention to detail and cinematography. From carefully recreated sets of Raja Harishchandra, to the unique 'aufnahme' technique used by Phalke, every detail, from the costumes to the makeup, adds a touch of realism to the movie. The film also highlights Phalke's creativity and his innovation in filmmaking by using techniques like stopping and starting the camera to facilitate special effects.

Overall, Harishchandrachi Factory is an incredibly engaging and inspiring movie that delves deep into the history of Indian cinema. The film's grounded yet informative narrative, realistic portrayal of the protagonist, stunning cinematography, insightful narrative, and attention to detail, gives the viewer an exciting insight into the birth of Indian cinema. It is no wonder that it went on to receive several national and international awards, including the Best Feature Film at the 2009 National Film Awards.
