Heights is a 2005 drama film that delves into the lives of several New Yorkers over the course of one day. The film follows a day in the life of various characters, each of whom are facing their own struggles, challenges and fears. Everyone is on their own path, but their paths intertwine, leading to unexpected consequences. Isabel (Elizabeth Banks) is a young, aspiring photographer who is about to be engaged to Jonathan (James Marsden), a successful lawyer. Meanwhile, her mother, Diana Lee (Glenn Close), is a famous stage actress who is hoping to reconnect with her daughter after a long estrangement. Over the course of the day, Isabel struggles with her feelings for her former lover, while Diana Lee grapples with a new revelation that threatens to derail her career.

Throughout the film we also meet a variety of other characters going through their own struggles - a young actress who is desperate for a role, a struggling artist who is dealing with depression, and a young gay man who is struggling with his sexuality. These characters all cross paths throughout the day, leading to drama and emotional moments.

The movie begins when Isabel is awoken by a phone call from her mother. Diana Lee is in town for her Broadway show and wants to see her daughter before she leaves. Isabel goes out to start her day, embarking on a series of encounters with New York City dwellers that reveal the city’s beauty and grit.

James Marsden's character, Jonathan, is a successful lawyer and Isabel’s fiancé. In his attempt to woo her with a love letter, we get a glimpse into the relationship they have built over time. Despite being privy to her deepest secrets, Jonathan doesn’t realize how Isabel’s career struggles are hindering her commitment to their love.

Meanwhile, Glenn Close’s character, Diana Lee, is juggling her Broadway career with a new revelation that could jeopardize her future. Letting go of her own ego and navigating her relationship with her daughter becomes her immediate task.

As their paths crisscross, answering a series of personal questions becomes imperative in coming to terms with the perfect facade they have built.

Director Chris Terrio does a great job of capturing the hustle and bustle of New York City in the film. The cinematography is beautiful, and the acting is superb. Elizabeth Banks gives a standout performance as Isabel, bringing depth and complexity to the character.

The movie explores the themes of identity, relationships, and the search for purpose. Through the characters' struggles and interactions, Heights shows us that nothing in life is ever simple or straightforward - we all have our complexities and struggles.

In addition to the great performances, the film features music by Ben Butler and Eric D. Johnson that underscores the emotional moments perfectly. The use of music was subtle and never distracting, adding to the overall feel of the movie.

One critique of the film is that it can be slow-paced at times. The movie takes its time to carefully weave the characters and their stories together, leading to a climactic ending that ties everything together.

Overall, Heights is a well-acted and beautifully shot film that delves into the complexities of relationships and the human condition. It recreates the city that never sleeps in a raw and honest way and shows us that everyone, no matter how successful or put together they may seem, has their own struggles and fears to face.

Heights is a 2004 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8 and a MetaScore of 59.
