Hush is a psychological thriller that centers around Jackson and Helen, a young successful couple living in New York City. At Christmas, Jackson takes Helen to meet his mother at Kilronan, his family's prestigious horse ranch in Kentucky. Martha is kind and welcoming to her son's girlfriend, even though she is somewhat old-fashioned and therefore not very fond of the fact that the unmarried couple lives together.
Shortly after Jackson and Helen return home, they discover they are going to be parents. The couple marries at Kilronan, where Helen meets Alice, the mother of Jackson's deceased father. Martha and Alice have a grudge between them, and later Martha forbids Helen to speak to her husband's grandmother. Only a few months into her pregnancy, Helen is the victim of an attempted mugging that threatens the life of her unborn child. Realizing that the city may not be the best environment in which to raise a child, the couple decides to move to the safety and rural charm of Kilronan.
Martha is more than happy to receive the couple, and she is very pleased that her son wishes to carry on the family business of breeding and racing horses. As well, she is very pleased that her first grandchild will be raised in her home. The new household settles into daily life on the ranch, despite a growing tension between the two women. As Martha's behavior becomes increasingly unsettling, and as Helen's due date approaches, the young woman begins to delve into her new family's past; convinced that her well respected high society mother-in-law is not the woman her son and small Southern community believe her to be.
