In Her Shoes is a 2005 movie that stars Shirley MacLaine, Toni Collette, and Cameron Diaz. The movie is about a family of three women. Shirley MacLaine portrays Ella who is Rose and Maggie's grandmother who they do not remember from their childhood. Ella's daughter was their mother who died when they were young. Toni Collette plays Rose who is a lawyer who cleans up the messes that her sister Maggie makes. Maggie has issues reading and has no ambition. She lives with Rose but then is kicked out after she sleeps with Rose's boyfriend. This leads to a falling out between the two.
Maggie and Rose suffer without each other. Both love each other and share a deep love for shoes since they ironically have the exact same shoe size. Maggie goes through her dad's desk and finds letters to her and Rose from Ella.
She decides to use Ella to get money and a place to stay. Ella invites Maggie to stay with her at her retirement complex. Maggie accepts but Ella sees that she lacks drive and ambition. She tells her that if she works at her complex that she will match how much she makes so that she can become an actress and take lessons.
A patient who was an English teacher helps Maggie to learn how to read. Some of the people in the complex ask Maggie to go clothes shopping for her and she starts a business. Rose becomes engaged to a man named Simon and has become a dog walker.
Ella contacts her and she goes to meet her and discovers that Maggie is there as well. The girls are told the truth about their mother that she had mental issues and crashed her car on purpose. Ella helps the two reconcile and the two plan Rose's impending nuptials to Simon where they bond once again over a pair of shoes.
