In the Money is a 1933 drama film directed by Edward Sloman. The movie stars George Bancroft, Judith Anderson, and Frances Dee in the lead roles. George Bancroft plays the central character of Dan O'Farrell, a former boxer who now runs a small grocery store in New York City. Dan is a proud man who takes immense pride in his hard work and the little he has. He is a man of principles, hardworking, and honest.

Dan also has a daughter named Molly (Frances Dee), who is about to get engaged to a wealthy young man named Ted Barrow (in a minor role played by Tom Brown). When Dan learns of Ted's family background, he realizes that they have a history of gambling and are not as wealthy as they might appear. This knowledge goes against his principles, and Dan starts to distance himself from the Barrow family and his daughter.

On the top of that, a gangster named Happy Fenton (played by Arthur Hohl) comes to Dan's store and demands that Dan pay protection money to him. Dan is initially reluctant to pay, but eventually agrees to do so to keep his family safe. However, when Dan learns that Happy is involved in a counterfeiting operation, he tries to back out of the deal.

Meanwhile, Judith Anderson plays the role of Happy's girlfriend, Marge, who is drawn to Dan because of his dignity and principles. Marge hates the life she leads with Happy and wants to escape from it. She sees Dan as her way out, but Dan does not return her feelings.

As the story progresses, Dan finds himself in a dilemma, as his principles and his responsibility towards his family come into conflict. He has to decide whether to pay the protection money or stand up to the gangsters, risking his family's safety.

In The Money is a well-written and well-acted movie that examines the theme of moral dilemmas and the choices we make. The movie demonstrates how difficult it is to live by principles in a world that values wealth and power. George Bancroft delivers a standout performance as Dan, portraying a man of immense strength with the dire situation he is put in. He gives the character depth beyond that in the script, portraying the anguish of a man who is struggling to do the right thing.

Judith Anderson is also excellent in her portrayal of Marge, bringing sensitivity and a yearning for a better life to the character. She and George Bancroft have excellent chemistry, and their relationship is one of the most compelling aspects of the movie. Frances Dee, however, lacks depth in her character but her acting is passable. Young Tom Brown manages to shine despite the limitations of his role.

The direction by Edward Sloman highlights 1930s New York City, and the movie contains some memorable scenes, such as the ones in Dan's grocery store and the climactic scene in the gangsters' hideout. The filmography and cinematography do not have a sense of generic quality, which is always nice to watch.

In the Money raises questions that are relevant to any era, such as the balance between principles and personal responsibility. Overall, the movie is a thought-provoking and enjoyable watch with some solid acting performances and a theme that is as relevant today as it was in the 1930s.

In The Money is a 1933 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 6 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7.
