Jamaica Inn is a 1939 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. The movie is set in the early 19th century in Cornwall, where Mary Yellan (Maureen O'Hara), a young and headstrong woman, travels to the remote and eerie Jamaica Inn to visit her aunt, Patience (Marie Ney), who recently married the inn's owner, Joss Merlyn (Leslie Banks).

However, upon arrival, Mary soon discovers that the inn is not what it seems. Joss is a violent and abusive man who, along with his band of smugglers, use the inn as a base for their illegal activities. Mary is immediately drawn to Jem Trehearne (Robert Newton), a handsome and mysterious man who also happens to be one of the smugglers. Together, they try to uncover the truth behind the smuggling ring and put a stop to it, all while trying to stay alive in the process.

Charles Laughton, one of the biggest stars of his time, plays the role of Sir Humphrey Pengallan, a local squire and magistrate who becomes involved in the smuggling ring. Laughton's portrayal of the eccentric and manipulative character is one of the highlights of the movie, as he steals every scene he's in with his commanding and engaging performance.

The movie is Hitchcock's last film made in the UK before moving to Hollywood, and it showcases his signature style of suspense and intrigue. The film's atmosphere is dark and eerie, with shadows and silhouettes used to great effect to create a sense of foreboding and tension. The use of sound is also worth noting, as it adds to the film's ominous and unsettling tone.

Jamaica Inn is notable for being O'Hara's first major film role, and she delivers a strong and memorable performance as Mary Yellan. Her character is a feisty and independent woman who refuses to be intimidated or controlled by the men around her. Newton, too, is excellent as the charming but conflicted Jem Trehearne, and his chemistry with O'Hara is palpable. The supporting cast is also strong, with Banks and Ney effectively portraying the twisted relationship between Joss and Patience.

Overall, Jamaica Inn is a thrilling and suspenseful movie that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The film's stunning visuals, engaging performances, and Hitchcock's masterful direction make it a must-see for fans of suspense and classic cinema.

Jamaica Inn is a 1939 crime movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.
