Just Heroes is a 1989 Hong Kong crime drama film directed by John Woo and Wu Ma. The movie tells the story of two police officers and a former criminal teaming up to take down a gang of robbers. The movie begins with the introduction of the two police officers, Lam Kwok-Kuen (David Chiang) and Chung Ho-Tung (Danny Lee), who have different personalities yet work together to fight crime in their city. Lam is the more experienced and calm officer, while Chung is the hot-headed rookie with a short fuse. During a stakeout, they encounter a former criminal, Fatty Cheung (Kuan Tai Chen), who witnesses a bank robbery involving their target, the ruthless gang leader, Kwan.

With Kwan on the loose and none of his men willing to testify against him, the trio decides to take matters into their own hands. They plot to lure Kwan into a trap and bring him to justice. However, this proves to be a difficult task as Kwan is a mastermind criminal who has thought of everything in advance.

The plot is very well developed and moves at a brisk pace. The characters are given depth and are likable, making the audience invested in their success in taking down Kwan. The action scenes are well choreographed and exciting, as one can expect from a John Woo directed film.

One of the main themes of the movie is the idea of redemption. Fatty Cheung is a former criminal who is trying to turn his life around and make amends for his past mistakes. However, his past continually haunts him, and he struggles to convince Lam and Chung of his sincerity. Through his interactions with the two police officers and his eventual sacrifice, Fatty's redemption arc is one of the standout features of the movie.

Another theme is the idea of loyalty. The bond between Lam and Chung is tested throughout the film as they have different ideas on how to approach their mission. Lam wants to play by the book and follow protocol, while Chung is willing to go to any lengths to bring Kwan down. The loyalty between the three main characters, and the lengths they go to in order to help each other, is what makes the movie so emotionally captivating.

The performances of the lead actors are outstanding. David Chiang is charismatic and dignified as the experienced and wise Lam. Danny Lee, who was a regular collaborator with John Woo, delivers a memorable performance as the impulsive and brash Chung. Kuan Tai Chen is excellent as Fatty Cheung, portraying a character that is relatable and sympathetic.

The cinematography is also worth noting, with the use of light and shadows adding to the overall mood of the movie. The lighting in the action scenes is especially impressive, adding a level of drama and intensity to the already well-executed fight scenes.

Overall, Just Heroes is a must-see for any fan of Hong Kong cinema, action movies, or crime dramas. The movie combines the best elements of all three genres, delivering a highly entertaining and emotionally satisfying experience. It is a testament to the talents of John Woo and the lead actors, whose performances elevate the movie beyond a typical action flick.
