Kapurush is a 1965 Indian Bengali language movie, directed by the famous filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The film stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhavi Mukherjee, and Haradhan Bannerjee in lead roles. It's a romantic drama film, adapted from two short stories, "Nastanirh" and "Dui Bon" by Rabindranath Tagore. The plot of the movie revolves around Amitabha Roy (Soumitra Chatterjee), a writer, who is travelling to Delhi by train for an official work. Due to some circumstances, he has to get down at a small station called Nishaatpore, where he meets his former love, Karuna (Madhavi Mukherjee). Karuna is now married and lives in Nishaatpore with her husband, a district magistrate named Bishwambhar Roy (Haradhan Bannerjee).

Amitabha is surprised to see Karuna again after eight years, and his old feelings for her start to resurface. He is invited to Karuna's house, where he meets Bishwambhar Roy, who is a big fan of Amitabha's writing. Bishwambhar soon realizes that there is something going on between his wife and the visiting writer, and starts getting suspicious and insecure. The rest of the movie follows the tense relationship between the three characters, as they try to navigate through their feelings and emotions.

The film's narrative devices are refreshingly unconventional. There are a lot of dialogues, but they're not always direct, and there are characters who speak in riddles. The film also makes a great use of flashbacks and telling the story from multiple points of view. The cinematography is another standout element of the movie, with Ray's signature style of long takes and carefully constructed frames.

The lead actors deliver remarkable performances, especially Soumitra Chatterjee as the writer Amitabha. His smoldering intensity and subtle expressions convey his character's inner turmoil and his struggles with his feelings for Karuna. Madhavi Mukherjee's portrayal of Karuna is nuanced and layered, while Haradhan Bannerjee also manages to create a complex and sympathetic character in Bishwambhar Roy.

One of the film's biggest strengths is its exploration of the themes of love, relationships, and morality. Ray paints a picture of a society that strictly adheres to its social norms and traditions, where love and personal happiness are often sacrificed in the name of duty and respectability. The film doesn't romanticize any of its characters, and instead shows their flaws and weaknesses as they try to make sense of their own desires and choices.

Overall, Kapurush is an engaging film that's a fine example of Satyajit Ray's directorial skills. It's a thoughtful and profound film that deals with complex human emotions with sensitivity and depth. The movie is a must-watch for fans of Indian cinema and for anyone looking for a mature and intelligent love story.
