Karayuki-san, the Making of a Prostitute is a 1975 documentary on the lives of women forced into prostitution during and after World War II. They were told that they were doing this for the benefit of their nation and their families who were often in extreme poverty. The film focuses on the recollections of 74 year old Kikuyo Zendo who was one of the many women forced into the profession. Many of the women, like Zendo, were sold to work outside Japan and never returned.
