Kizhakku Cheemayile is a 1993 Tamil language drama film directed by Bharathiraja. The film features an ensemble cast of Vijay Kumar, Radhika Sarathkumar, and Napolean in lead roles along with newcomers Vignesh and Rekha in supporting roles. The story revolves around a small village in Karnataka and its people. Kuyili (Radhika Sarathkumar) is an innocent girl living in the village. She falls in love with the local boatman Veerasamy (Vijay Kumar). However, their love faces opposition from the villagers, especially Kuyili's father Rangappan (Napolean) who disagrees to their marriage.

The reason behind Rangappan's opposition is his hatred towards Veerasamy and his family. Rangappan had a conflict with Veerasamy's father, Chakravarthy (Vignesh), years ago. That enmity carries forward to the present day and Rangappan does not want his daughter to marry into their family.

Despite this, Kuyili and Veerasamy get married in secret with the help of their close friends. Their love is put to test when their secret is revealed and Rangappan comes to know about their marriage. He is furious and separates the couple. Kuyili is sent to live with her aunt in another village while Veerasamy is left behind in the same village to continue his work.

The rest of the movie follows the struggles of Veerasamy and his fight to get his wife back. He faces opposition from the villagers who do not want him to reunite with Kuyili. He also faces challenges from Rangappan who is adamant about not accepting their marriage. However, Veerasamy is determined to win back Kuyili and goes through various hurdles to do so.

As the movie progresses, we see the different attitudes of people towards love, caste, and religion. We see the contrast between the older generation who are rigid in their beliefs and the younger generation who are more open-minded. The movie also shows the power of love and the lengths one would go to for their loved ones.

The film is known for its melodious songs which were composed by A.R. Rahman. Songs like "Devathayai Kanden" and "Porale Ponnuthayi" became chartbusters and are still popular today. The film was also appreciated for its realistic portrayal of village life and the issues faced by people living in such areas.

Kizhakku Cheemayile is one of Bharathiraja's finest works and is considered a cult classic in Tamil cinema. The performances by Vijay Kumar, Radhika Sarathkumar, and Napolean were widely appreciated by critics and audiences alike. The film won the National Film Award for Best Tamil Film and was also selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards.
