La Traviata ("The Woman Gone Astray") is a 1982 movie based on a 1853 opera by Giuseppe Verdi, and the film also features music by Verdi. It was released in the United States in 1983 and was originally released in Italy in 1982. The film stars Plácido Domingo and Teresa Stratas as Alfredo Germont and Violetta Valery respectively. The film is set in Paris in the 1840s.

Violetta is the heir to a rich baron and Alfredo meets her when in her home with people admiring the artwork that decorates the home. When he firsts lays eyes on Violetta, he is taken aback by her looks, and she follows him when he rushes away after the first glance.

A whirlwind romance occurs, with many ups and downs as the movie progresses. Alfredo's father begs Violetta to end the romance, among other things, suggesting the pair's love isn't meant to be and is doomed to fail.
