Maalik is a 1972 Indian Bollywood drama film directed by Mahesh Kaul and starring Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Ashok Kumar. The film revolves around the life of a young man called Maalik, who is struggling to make ends meet for his family. Rajesh Khanna plays the lead role of Maalik, while Sharmila Tagore plays his love interest.

The movie begins with Maalik, who works as a clerk in a government office, returning home to his impoverished family. His father, played by Ashok Kumar, is a retired school teacher who is forced to sell off his ancestral property to pay off his debts. Maalik's younger sister is about to get married but the family is unable to afford the expenses. Maalik takes it upon himself to find a way to make ends meet and decides to start his own business.

With the help of his friend Ranjeet (played by Vinod Mehra), Maalik opens a small grocery store. The store becomes a hit as Maalik's honesty and hard work win over the hearts of the customers. Maalik's success, however, attracts the attention of a local businessman who wants to destroy Maalik's business to remove competition. Maalik refuses to give up and decides to fight back.

The movie also explores the love story between Maalik and Geeta, played by Sharmila Tagore. Geeta is a young girl who is forced to marry a much older man against her will. She meets Maalik and the two develop a relationship. However, their love is threatened by Geeta's husband and Maalik's enemies.

Maalik features some memorable songs, including "Gore Rang Pe Na Itna Gumaan Kar" and "Dil Toh Hai Dil". The music is composed by R. D. Burman and the lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi.

The film has been praised for its portrayal of the struggles of the lower middle class in India. Rajesh Khanna delivers a powerful performance as Maalik, portraying the character's determination and resilience. Sharmila Tagore is equally impressive as Geeta, bringing depth and emotion to her character.

Overall, Maalik is a well-crafted drama that explores themes of love, family, and the struggle for survival. The movie's strong performances, memorable music, and compelling storyline make it a classic of Indian cinema.
