Mahayanam is a 1989 Indian Malayalam language drama film that portrays the struggles and hardships of the Indian middle-class community during the 1980s. The movie was directed by Joshiy and produced by PKR Pillai. It starred Mammootty, Seema, and Mukesh in the lead roles. The movie starts with the introduction of the protagonist, Peter Joseph (Mammootty), an educated and unemployed youth who has been struggling to find a job for several years. Despite his qualifications and skills, he was unable to secure a job due to the high level of competition in the job market. His father, Joseph (Thilakan), who is a retired government employee, is also struggling to make ends meet, and they are living in a financially unstable situation.

One day, Peter comes across an advertisement seeking candidates to work in a shipyard in Saudi Arabia. Excited by the prospect of a job, Peter decides to apply for the position. However, to his dismay, he discovers that there is a hefty fee attached to the application process, which he cannot afford. Desperate for the job, Peter turns to his friends for help but is unable to raise the required money.

Meanwhile, Peter meets Annie (Seema), a street performer, and falls in love with her. Annie reciprocates his feelings, but her mother is against their relationship as she wants Annie to marry a wealthy man. Despite facing opposition from Annie's mother, the couple decides to get married.

As their financial situation worsens, Peter and his father decide to sell their ancestral property to raise the money required for the application process. However, they face several complications while trying to obtain the necessary paperwork, and their efforts are in vain.

As Peter's frustration builds, he stumbles upon an opportunity to attend a recruitment rally organized by the local politician, Kunjukutty (Mukesh). The recruitment rally promised employment opportunities for the unemployed youth, but Peter soon discovers that it is merely a ploy to garner votes for the approaching election.

Disillusioned by the corrupt system and its politicians, Peter decides to start a movement to bring about change in society. He meets like-minded people who share his vision of a just and fair society and organizes rallies and strikes to bring attention to the issue of unemployment and government apathy towards the people.

As the movement gains momentum, the police arrest Peter and his comrades for inciting violence and causing a public disturbance. In the police station, Peter meets a group of prisoners who share their stories of injustice and exploitation at the hands of the system.

The experience changes Peter's perspective, and he realizes that the fight for social justice is not just about personal gain but about challenging the status quo and bringing about genuine change. He decides to continue his fight for social justice, and his efforts eventually pay off as the government is forced to take notice and implement measures to alleviate the conditions of the unemployed youth.
