Maid in Manhattan is a film about a young woman, Marisa, working as a maid in a first class hotel in Manhattan. She is a single mother, and has a young son named Ty. One day, while on the job, Marissa and a co-worker are cleaning a room of a rich socialite guest and are impressed with her expensive clothing hanging in the closet. Marisa tries on one of the socialites pricey coats and fantasizes about how wonderful it would be to live the life of the rich and famous.
Meanwhile, Ty meets a guest of the hotel named Christopher, a wealthy senatorial candidate running for public office. The two befriend as they head up to the room Ty's mother is cleaning. Still wearing the designer coat, Christopher mistakenly believes that Marisa is a hotel guest and is instantly attracted to her. Not wanting to reveal her identity, Marisa pretends to be the socialite staying in the hotel suite. She begins to date Christopher being very careful not to let the hotel management discover the affair.
Christopher invites Marisa out to dinner. The hotel staff secretly help Marisa prepare for the evening. They fix her hair, and are able to rent a beautiful cocktail dress for her. The duo have a wonderful time, and that evening, return to Christopher's hotel room where they make love.
The next morning, the hotel management fires Marisa when they find out about the affair. Still unaware of Marisa's identity, Christopher searches unsuccessfully for her. Realizing their relationship could never work, Marisa tries to forget about the man she loves. She goes on with her life, and secures employment at another nearby hotel.
One day, while out with her son, she reunites with Christopher and confesses her secret to him. The duo express their love for each other. In the end, Marisa, Christopher and Ty become a family, accepting each other just the way they are.
